What the Room Size on an Air Purifier Box Really Means: ACH, CADR and 8 Real Examples
One Levoit box lists 254 square feet and 53 square feet for the same machine. Both are true. Here's how to read the numbers before you buy.

The room size on an air purifier box depends on how many times per hour the maker assumes the air gets cleaned, called air changes per hour or ACH. The same machine covers a big room slowly and a small room quickly. The Levoit Core Mini-P shows it plainly: Levoit lists it for 254 square feet at 1 ACH and 53 square feet at 4.8 ACH. When you compare two purifiers, check that their room sizes use the same ACH.
I like numbers that can be checked, so I pulled the room sizes, CADR figures and power ratings for eight purifiers straight from each maker's page on September 25, 2026. Mine is the small Puppy Kind on the reading-nook shelf, and I wanted to see where it sits among the rest.

ACH, in one sentence
ACH is the number of times per hour the purifier can pass the whole room's volume of air through its filter. At 1 ACH, the air in the room gets filtered once an hour. At 4.8 ACH, it gets filtered almost five times an hour, the basis behind the AHAM Verifide room sizes printed for the Winix and Honeywell models. Because the machine's airflow stays the same, a higher ACH target always shrinks the room.

Eight purifiers, read correctly
| Purifier | Room size at 1 ACH | At 4 to 4.8 ACH | CADR | Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Levoit Core Mini-P | 254 sq ft | 53 sq ft | 34 CFM | 7 W, 12 V adapter |
| Levoit Core 200S-P | 672 sq ft | 140 sq ft | 90 CFM | 37 W, wall plug |
| Levoit Core P350-P | 1,042 sq ft | 217 sq ft | 140 CFM | 45 W, wall plug |
| Blueair Blue Pure Mini Max Auto | not listed | 105 sq ft | not listed | 10 W |
| Coway Airmega 100 | 810 sq ft | 405 sq ft at 2 ACH | smoke 108, dust 124, pollen 112 | 25 W |
| Coway Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH | 1,748 sq ft | 361 sq ft | smoke 233, dust 246, pollen 240 | 77 W |
| Winix 5510 | 1,882 sq ft in 1 hour | 392 sq ft | dust 252, pollen 247, smoke 253 | not listed |
| Puppy Kind Pet Air Purifier | not listed | not listed | not listed | USB-C, 5 V / 1 A |
Puppy Kind's package states "up to 216 square feet for a standard-size living room" and doesn't give the ACH behind it. Treat it as a one-room figure, and don't line it up against a 4.8 ACH number from another brand.
What the numbers mean in a dog home
A big room number doesn't tell you how clean the air is right where your dog lies down. Dander and dog smell start at the dog bed, the crate and the rug by the back door. A small purifier set a foot or two away works on that air first, while a floor unit across the room works on the whole volume more slowly.
So the question I ask is simple: where does my dog spend the day? For one room, a small unit beside the bed is enough. For a big open-plan space, the CADR and 4.8 ACH figure of a floor model tell you more.

For the full measurements of the unit on my shelf, here are the size, power and filter specs I checked.
Numbers on a box are useful once you know the basis behind them. For the spot where my dog sleeps, I care most about how close the purifier sits to the bed.
Questions readers ask
What does ACH mean on an air purifier?
ACH means air changes per hour, the number of times the purifier can filter the room's full volume of air in an hour. Makers often list room sizes at 1 ACH and at 4.8 ACH, and the 1 ACH figure is always much larger.
What is CADR on an air purifier?
CADR is the clean air delivery rate, the volume of filtered air a purifier delivers per minute, usually in cubic feet per minute. Brands often split it into smoke, dust and pollen figures.
Why do air purifier room sizes vary so much?
Brands use different ACH targets. Levoit lists the Core Mini-P at 254 square feet at 1 ACH and 53 square feet at 4.8 ACH, and both describe the same machine.
How big a room does the Puppy Kind air purifier cover?
Puppy Kind's package lists up to 216 square feet for a standard-size living room, about 12 by 18 feet. The package doesn't state an ACH figure, so treat it as a one-room rating.
Is a higher CADR always better for a dog home?
For a large open room, yes. For the air right beside a dog bed, placement matters as much, and a small unit a foot or two from the bed works on that air first.
