What Does 216 Square Feet Look Like? Reading the Puppy Kind Box in a Real Room

Up to 216 square feet on the box, from a purifier you can hold in one hand. Here's what that looks like in a real room.

A cozy standard-size living room with a sofa, rug and a golden retriever on a dog bed, the Puppy Kind purifier on a side table nearby.
The kind of room the box is talking about: a real, everyday living room.

Puppy Kind's package for the Pet Air Purifier states "up to 216 square feet for a standard-size living room." That's a room about 12 by 18 feet, from a purifier you can hold in one hand. Think of a family room, a good-size bedroom, or a home office with a dog bed in the corner.

My second unit sits on the end table in the den, right beside the dog bed. When I set it up, I ran a tape measure across the floor to see where the room landed against the box. Then I drew 216 out three ways so you can hold it up against the room your dog uses most.

What the box promises, word for word

The package wording is short: up to 216 square feet, for a standard-size living room.

We read those two parts together, because together they describe the purifier's job. "Up to 216 square feet" gives the top of the room size it's meant for, and "standard-size living room" gives you the picture of an everyday room where people and dogs spend their time.

That's a lot of room for a body about 3 inches across, and it's the kind of room where a dog spends most of its day.

My wife bought 3 of them, we gave one to a friend and have the other 2 for our house, right now we are only using one and what a difference they made in my house. Our basset hound is 10 years and had a stroke 6 months ago, now she is incontinent and can't make it to the pads on time or outside. This device is heaven sent, thank you for the item.

Three rooms, one number

We started with the easy one. A room 12 feet wide and 18 feet long has 12 x 18 = 216 square feet of floor.

Then we stretched it. A room 9 feet wide and 24 feet long also has 9 x 24 = 216 square feet. It's the same floor area, but it feels more like a long den.

Last, we squared it. A square room about 14 feet 8 inches on each side comes out to about 216 square feet too. In decimals, that's 14.7 x 14.7, which is just over 216.

Three floor plans on a one-foot grid: 12 by 18 feet, 9 by 24 feet, and a square about 14 feet 8 inches per side, each 216 square feet.
Three rooms, one number: 216 square feet in three shapes.

We drew these as floor plans to show how many shapes 216 can take. If your dog's room looks like one of them, you're in the range the box describes.

Your room in two measurements

Measure the room, find the spot by the dog bed.

All you need is a tape measure. Measure the room's length and width, wall to wall, and multiply. That's your floor area in square feet.

Sketch the room, multiply, compare with 216.

Two measurements and one multiplication.

A room 11 feet by 13 feet has 143 square feet, well inside 216. A room 14 feet by 15 feet has 210, just under. A room 15 feet by 16 feet has 240, a bit over.

If your tape shows feet and inches, turn the inches into part of a foot first. Six inches is half a foot, so 12 feet 6 inches becomes 12.5 feet. Three inches is a quarter foot, so 10 feet 3 inches becomes 10.25 feet.

For an L-shaped room, split the floor into two rectangles. Measure each one, multiply its length by its width, and add the two answers so the missing corner stays out of your total.

12 x 18feet = 216
9 x 24feet = 216
14.7 x 14.7feet, about 216

Getting the most from a one-room purifier

We treat the 216 line as a match guide. It tells you the purifier is made for one room at a time, so the smart move is to put it in the right room.

Pick the room your dog uses most. If your number lands at or under 216, that's a natural fit. If the room is much bigger, or your home has several dog rooms, do what happy owners do and give each room its own unit. A body this small makes that easy.

I was a huge skeptic. Even more so when I opened my order and realized how small they are (I bought 3). But, wow!! I've been using them for several days now, and I'm amazed! They work! Well!! I am already ready to order more for upstairs.

The room's shape still matters. In a long or L-shaped room, set the purifier in the part where your dog actually rests. Ours sits on the end table right beside the dog bed in the den.

In a long room, it goes where the dog rests, not at the far end.

If your room is an odd shape and you're unsure the 216 square feet covers it, ask. Puppy Kind's team replies quickly through the Contact Us page, and the 30-day product guarantee made the decision easy for me.

For the rest of the numbers, here are the size, power and filter specs I checked.

Once you've run the tape and done the multiplication, you'll know where your dog's room lands against 216. Then set the purifier right beside the dog bed.
